RECRUITING PROBLEM
NO PEACE-TIME CONSCRIPTION BRITAIN FAVOURS VOLUNTARY SYSTEM (British Official Wireless.^ Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright RUGBY, January 6. (Received January 7, at noon.) The Minister for the Co-ordinatioii of Defence, in a speech at Glasgow, prophesied that Britain would never introduce conscription in peace time. He ridiculed the fantastic notions entertained in some quarters abroad regarding alleged failure to solve the recruiting problem. “ I think,’’ he said, “ our foreign friends do not always understand our national characteristics. Wo hold very tenaciously to our traditions. We have our own ideas about the way we shall govern ourselves and defend ourselves. I think we shall be able to show Other nations that we—perhaps alone among the nations of Europe—ran make the voluntary system work, and that it will suffice for our needs.
