OBITUARY

MR ROBERT STUERT

Mr Robert Stuert, who died in the closing days of the year, Was for many years a,well-known figure in the Crookston district. Ho was born in the north of Ireland, and came to New Zealand by the Pomona in 1876, when he was 18 years of age. He worked for a time in the Taieri and other districts before going to Tapanui and Crookston. For many years he Was known as an expert ditcher and as a shearer in the days of blade shearing, and for one or two seasons at least was the ringer in the Blackstone Hill shed. He was never married, and when the infirmities of ago grew oh him ho found a quiet retreat in Ross Home, where he was able to keep himself on his savings and to receive the comfort that his old age needed. During the seven years of his residence therehe made many friends, . and was always very appreciative of visits from old Crookston 1 friends. He was a most faithful and regular attendant at North-east Valley Presbyterian Church. During his last days he suffered much, with exemplary patience. When the end came he was laid to rest in the Tapanni Cemetery, being followed to bis last resting place by a group of . old employers and friends. MRS JAMES ELLIOTT Mrs James Elliott, who died on Sunday. was born at Caithness, in Scotland, in 1853, and came to New Zealand in 1856. She resided with her parents at West Taieri until 1871, when she married Mr James and went* to live at, Cottesbrook, Middlemarch. A series of removals later took Mr and Mrs Elliott to Mr Humphries’s farm at Garthmye. to Messrs Wilson and Glehdining’s at Romania,_ to Lauder, and then to Blackstone Hill, where they lived for 30 years. They later resided on their own property at Mount floss, and finally came to Dunedin to retire in 1913. Mrs Elliott is survived by one sister—Mrs Robert Muirhesd, of Mosgiel—and a family of six—Mrs A. B. Armour, Mrs A. M. Matheson, Mrs G. Greig (Dunedin), Mrs W. E. Beattie (Patearoa), Mr W. E.H. Elliott (Clarendon), and Mr R. N. Elliott (Middlcmarch). There are also 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grand-children.
