DAMPIER MEMORIAL

The Poet Laureate (Mr John Masefield) has agreed to a request by the .West Australian Historical Society _to ■write a couplet and a dedicatory oration for the William Dampier memorial to be erected at Broome by the Commonwealth Government and the Historical Society.-' Mr Masefield’s interest in and ■wide knowledge of great navigators and seamen are revealed in many of his books, and he did notable work on the life and exploration of Dampier by editing a modern edition of his voyages. De-

signs for the memorial are being prepared in Perth by Mr Marshall Clifton, honorary architect and artist to the Historical Society. These will incorporate Dampier’s Coat or Arms, a framed copy of which was sent last year to the State Government by. Mr W. H. Deakin, of Worcester, one of two surviving descendants of Wiliam Dampier’s brother. The memorial will be erected in Bedford Park, where it will overlook Roebuck Bay, which was named after Dampier’s ship.
