DUKE OF WINDSOR
RIGHT TO LIVE OWN LIFE PRIVACY SHOULD BE RESPECTED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, December 17. ‘ The Times,’ in a leader, compares the Duke of Windsor’s request to the newspapers to permit him to live as a private citizen with Colonel Lindbergh’s. It points out that the latter’s wish was respected, with only a few exceptions. “ Certainly the Duke of Windsor is entitled to as much, whether he was well or ill advised. He made a most extraordinary and dramatic renunciation in order to exchange royalty for privacy and seek personal happiness. The least a sympathetic if wondering world can do is to accord him the right to live his own life.” HUNDREDS OF PRESENTS VIENNA, December 17. A veterinary surgeon was called in to attend the Duke of Windsor’s Cairn terrier, which was worsted in a fight with Baroness Rothschild’s dog. The fight might have ended fatally if the Duke had not rescued his pet. Hundreds of presents are arriving at the castle, including a puppy and many cases of wine, for the Duke, who has ordered their return to the donors. OFFERED SIXTY-SEVEN CASTLES LONDON, December 18. (Received December 19, at 1.30 a.m.) The newspapers publish a photograph of the Duke of Windsor in plus fours, a green pullover, a muffler, and smoking a pipe, golfing with his hostess. A Vienna message states that since it was first suggested that he will settle in Austria or Hungary the Duke of Windsor has been offered 67 castles, so keen is the nobility’s desire to have him as a permanent resident. POSES FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS VIENNA, December 18. (Received December 19, at 10 a.m.) The Duke of Windsor kept his promise to see the photographers. He was dressed in a sports coat and did not wear a hat. He posed for 10 mintes, gravely bowed, and said: “ I think that is enough.” He was pale 4 and serious, and all . attempts to make him smile failed.
