GOVERNING BODY MEETS ACTIVITIES OF MONTH REVIEWED The Council of the University of Otago met yesterday afternoon, there being present the Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell), Sir Lindo Ferguson, Sir James Allen, Bishop Fitcbctt. the Rev. D. C. Herron, Dr James Fitzgerald, Dr R. J. T. Bell, Dr F. S. Batchelor, Messrs J. Robertson, L. D. Ritchie, G. R. Ritchie. W. R. Brugh, F. W. Mitchell, A. Steeel, J. W. Howorth, and James Wallace. OUTPATIENT ACCOMMODATION. The Secretary of tho Otago Hospital Board wrote stating that steps are now being taken to expedite the provision of increased outpatient accommodation. CARNEGIE GRANT. The Carnegie Corporation Advisory Committee advised that £I,BOO had been allocated to the University of Otago for carrying on the home economics work in 1937. It was stated that this amount had been received. , “ It is very satisfactory to learn that the committee finds itself in the position of being able to make this grant,” commented the Chancellor.
The grant will be acknowledged with warm thanks. SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIZES. The Sub-dean of the Medical Faculty forwarded the following recommendations in respect of awards of scholarships and prizes:— Medical Travelling Scholarship.—H. B. Alexander. Obstetrical Scholarship.—Dr W. Hawksworth. Batchelor Medal. —H. B. Alexander. Marjorie M'Callum Medal.—H. B. Alexander. Senior Scholarship in Medicine.— Miss J. M. Sandel and E. M. Nanson (equal). «W. L. Christie Medal. —W. M. Manchester. Scott Medal.—Miss J. M. Sandel. Junior Clinical Medicine Medal.—A. F. Marshall. Senior Clinical Medicine Medal.—H. B. Alexander. Senior Clinical Surgery Medal.—H. B. Alexander. The recommendations were approved. “ One striking feature of these awards is the number of distinctions gained by Mr H. B. Alexander. This, I suppose, is almost unprecedented,” said the Chancellor. Sir T/indo Ferguson remarked that he had a brilliant record. The Dean of the Medical Faculty also rocomended that the Colquhouti Medal be awarded to D. T. Stewart, and that the award of_ a Fowler Scholarship be made to K. D. Stallworthy.—This was approved.
DENTAL AWARD. The Dean of the Dental Faculty recommended that the Leask Bronze Medal for excellence in prosthetic dentistry be awarded to I. M. Chirnside, with E. L. do Berry as a close second. HOME SCIENCE ANNIVERSARY. The Dean of the Home Science Faculty stated that it was proposed to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the School next year, from Saturday, May 15, to Monday, May 17. The council was asked to approve of the proposal, to send out invitations, to invito a suitable person to give the address, and to appoint a committee to complete the arrangements. “ The council will view the proposal with gratification,” said the Chancellor, “ and, 1 am sure, will beyglad to co-operate.” . ' A committee consisting of the Chancellor, Sir James Allen, and Mr Robertson was appointed. PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT. Dr E. F. D’Ath recommended that Dr Steven be released from her position as assistant in his department as from the end of January next, and that Dr Moloney, at present assistant in the physiology department, be promoted to take her place. This was approved by the dean of the faculty. LAW SOCIETY PRIZES. The Secretary of the Otago Law Society forwarded amended regulations for the award of the Law Society’s book prizes. The number of prizes had been reduced to five of £2 2s each.— The society was thanked for its ofler.
UNIVERSITIES BUREAU. The Universities Bureau asked the University of Otago to nominate a person resident in. Great Britain to act as its representative. The subscription of the University as an associate member was £ls a year.—The University is to join the bureau. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported that it had considered a letter from the professor of history suggesting that an assistant bo appointed in his department at £3OO per annum in place of two part-time assistants. It was resolved to recommend the council to advertise the position of assistant at £3OO per annum. The committee considered a request from Dr Newlands, chairman of the Court of Convocation, for assistance in the initial steps of an annual publication dealing with the activities of graduates and past students.—lt was resolved to make a grant of £2O for this work. The committee considered what action should be taken with regard to the £7,000 debenture debt falling due on January 1, 1937. It was noted that arrangements had already been made for paying off £2,000, and it was resolved that authority be given to the treasurer to arrange for a renewal of £5,000 on the best possible terms. The report was adopted. WORKS. The Works Committee reported that the city engineer wrote _ stating' that his estimate for the Leith wall provided for disposing of the surplus material excavated from behind the wall,
and it appeared that the quantity to be excavated would be approximately equal to the amount of filling. He asked if the University required a fresh estimate, of the cost of the work in view of the. introduction of the 40-hour week. He also stated that the greatest care would be taken to avoid unnecessary damage to the grounds.-*-lhe letter was received, and it was resolved that the city engineer be asked to provide the estimate referred to, whereupon an application would be mad© to the Education Department for an additional grant. The report was adopted.
