HUDSON RIVER
QUEEN MARY WHIRLPOOL A vast dredging programme is to be started in the Hudson Hirer, New York, so that the Queen Mary, the Normandie, and 1 United States naval vessels ran enter in perfect safety at all stages of the tide. At present both liners arc apt to cause dangerous whirlpools when they berth at low tide. Accidents which have befallen ferry boats in the Hudson River are attributed to the fact that both liners have been known to touch the bottom of the river at low tide, thus causing the current to swirl round their hulls. It is explained that at certain periods the two giant liners have to be pushed through the mud to their piers on account of the low level of the Hudson. At such a time the I,oooft long hulls of the liners present an unbroken wall to the swiftly-flowing river current, which is forced to flow at right angles to the main stream, and thus tends to cause a whirlpool in the immediate vicinity. The remedy is thought to lie in the deepening of the Hudson River to 4uft.
