OTAGO SWIMMING CENTRE

SUCCESS OF AUSTRALIAN VISIT Although final figures could not be given, the treasurer (Mr F. E. L. Forrester) reported to last night’s meeting of the Otago Swimming Centre that the financial result of the visit of the Australian team to Dunedin should be satisfactory to members. The meeting was attended by Messrs D. T. Wpodfieid (in the chair), D. S. Binning, F. E. L. Forrester, D. Thomson, C. J. Leeden, B. Kerr, E. Sonittag, D. Wateon, J. M'Taggart, and E. C. Isaacs (bon. secretary). Mr Leeden brought forward a proposal that during March the centre might stage what could be termed a “ swimming show,” which would consist largely of events of a novelty nature, including such items as a linns’ beauty parade, life-saving display in uniform, the Otago-Soutliland interprovincial'water polo and swimming contests, and several other special features. Such a meeting, Mr Leeden stated, should do much to arouse further interest in swimming generally. Members agreed that tpe proposal was a good one, and. the matter was referred for report to the executive, Mr Leeden being op-opted as a member to go fully into the proposal. The Dunedin Club was granted permission to stage the 500yds flying squadron championship at its annual carnival on February 18. The Dunedin Club also suggested that an endeavour should be made to secure free admission to the Baths during the hours held by the clubs for parents accompanying children so long as the former did not enter the water. It was decided to write to the City Council requesting that the concession be granted. The convener of the Diving Committee, Mr R. 0, Calder, submitted the following name* for the panel of diving judges for the ensuing season: — Messrs R. C. Calder. R. 0. Johnson, W. H. Matthews. H. E. Walker, W. A. Jenkins, E. H. James, Mrs E. C. Isaacs, and Miss J. Eggers. The recommendation was approved, and the secretary was instructed to forward a list to the New Zealand Council. The programme for the Macandrew Bay regatta on Boxing Day was approved, and the secretary was' instructed to make arrangements for the swimming officials and for the taking of entries. The Zenith dub was granted permission to amend the date of its carnival from February 25 to March 2.

Mr D. Thomson was appointed to take charge of the swimming events at the MoeraJti centenary carnival, and he was also empowered to arrange for a number of specially-selected swimmers to make the trip for the purpose of giving demonstrations and competing in races. It was decided that a special meeting of the centre be held on December 17 for the purpose of considering the executive’s recommendation on the selection of the Otago_ team for the New Zealand intermediate and junior championships at Nelson.
