BALCLUTHA PIPE BAND
ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Balclutha Pipe Band was iield on Saturday night, when the retiring president (Mr E. B. Lothian) presided over a good attendance. The president referred to the loss the hand had sustained by the death of its founder, Mr John Gold, and a resolution of sympathy with the family was carried in the usual manner. The seventeenth annual report and balance sheet showed the band to be in a good position, with a total credit balance of £225 8s !)d and a surplus of assets over liabilities of £374. Several new honorary members had been enrolled and a number of donations to the funds had been received. I’he band itself was. in good strength, and had taken part in the gatherings at Oamaru and Dunedin during the year. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet the president referred to the good work and enthusiasm of the committee, and to the general public interest taken in the welfare of the hand.
The motion was seconded by Mr Eden Bussell and carried. t '
A discussion took place on the subject of the formation of a Scottish Society in the district, and it was resolved, on the motion of Mr E. B. Gold, that the band call a public meeting of all interested for next Thursday night. The election of office-bearers for the ensuing year resulted as follows :—President, Mr Eden Bussell; vice-presi-dents, Messrs C. E. O’Hara “and John Copland; secretary, Mr H. Bower (reelected) ; committee —Messrs E. B. Lothian, E. B. Gold, D. Sinclair, W. Lovie, W. Anderson, W. B. Duff, D. Malcolm (drum-major), and C. Falconer (pipe-major). At the conclusion of the annual meeting a very enjoyable social evening was held, over which Mr Eden Bussell presided The toast of “ Parliament ” was proposed by the mayor (Mr D. T. Fleming) and responded to by the Hon. F. Waite, M.L.C.,: that of “ The Balclutha Pipe Band ” was proposed by Mr Simon WrigTit (life member) and responded to by Mr E. B. Lothian. A number of other toasts were honoured, and during the evening a number of elocutionary and vocal items were given. Visitors were present from the Momona, Milton, and Kaitangata Pipe Bauds.
