ROWING IN ENGLAND

ZURICH WINS HEHLEY CHALLENGE CUP JAPAN'S DEFEAT Pros# Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, July 4. In the Henley Challenge Cup final Zurich' defeated Leander by a length and a-quarter in 7min 25sec. The ‘ Daily Mail,’ commenting on the Japanese crew’s defeat, says: “British oarsmen will be happy again that orthodox rowing, as established by Britain and copied throughout the world, has triumphed. Zurich, averaging two stone heavier, did more than defeat the Japanese by six lengths in the sixth heat. It proved that the fastest stroke in the world cannot compete against a normal, physically powerful crew rowing more slowly but with great power and rhythm. Zurich led from the start and the further the crew rowed the greater they proved the superiority of the old style of oarsmanship despite the Japanese pluckily rowing themselves out.” * The Times ’ rowing writer says; “ The Japanese performance was too disappointing to represent the real merits of the competitors. Several of the crew were suffering from rheumatism.”
