Considerable opposition was displayed by a suction of the Labour Party in the State Assembly to the Government’s proposal to sell a large tract of land at Port Kembla to the Australian Iron and Steel Company . Ltd., which is about to embark on new ' industries, spending £1,000,000. The Minister of TLocal Government (Mr Spooner) explained that the Government would receive - £55.000 for the land. This money would be devoted to the electricity supply of the adjoining towns. He foreshadowed an industrial centre at Port Kembla second only to Newcastle, where the Broken Hill Proprietary Company’s works, are employing 12,637 hands, with a weekly wage bill of £63,885. He said the industries to he established at Port Kembla would include pig iron, steel, galvanised iron sheets, tinplate and tin containers, wire netting, wire nails, motor bodies, aeroplanes, and aeroplane parts. At least 1,000 additional men would be employed within two months. He repudiated a suggestion'by Labour members that the '-Government was aiding a monopoly, - adding that there was still ample laud at that port for any other industries. The Bui for the sale of the land passed all stages.
