FRUIT TRADE,

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In your issue of Ist inst. regarding the first annual meeting of the Otago Retail Fruiterers’ Association I was very surprised to read the members of the committee, which is comprised of five white members and five Chinese. I think about time the white race thought of who was going to run this country, white or Chinese. This association has a good number of members, and would have had more if it was not for just a few who clique together. I am talking about the big man, and keeping the small man out. A few of the small shopkeepers, who were in the association until one meeting was held, were never notified that there was such a meeting to be held. As long as some were notified, never mind about the rest. There was a boycott on for a while with two of the brokers in Dunedin, and the members stuck to the association and kept away from these two firms. When the boycott was lifted the small man went back to these firms and patronised them, I ■ I with the big man it was a different talc. 1 could mention one big firm which was the cause of all this, that has not been back to either of these firms more than three times since that meeting. Is that what .you call a real association? I think the small man can say “ Battle for yourself,” and let the association with the big firms at the bead of affairs carry on the association.—l am, etc., Small Man. ■ July 3.
