"BLACK EYE" HATS
“ Can you do anything about that hat of yours?” asked Mr Registrar Friend, at Clcrkenwell County Court, of a woman witness whose model dipped precariously over her left temple, “ Something depends on the impression I form of witnesses.” the registrar pointed out, 11 and that hat of yours gives you a black eye that is most disturbing.” To the wearer of an all-round droop creation he remarked: “This is worse. I can’t see your face at all.” “ Another black eye,” he commented as a third woman went into the witness box. “ Now, what have you been up to?” he asked a little later, when, looking up from his notes he saw an Eton-cropped hatless blonde smiling at him. “ Since yon didn’t like the hat, I took it off,” was the answer. “ Put it on again” he ordered. “ Even to get rid of a bjack eye you must not take off your hat.” When a fourth girl wearing a closefitting model appeared before him the registrar observed: “Now, there is a sensible hat for the witness box.”
