GOOD FARE FOR GRAND Fox Film’s 'Way Down East,’ which opens at the Grand to-morrow, is a moving and revealing picture of the elemental drama of a woman’s love. With a setting in bleak New England of the 1880’s, the film unfolds a tale of a young girl who bad loved well, but not wisely. When the young girl’s past is uncovered by gossip she finds herself struggling against the selfrighteous and prideful society of New England. The defenceless girl lights for the right to love and be loved again, and finally wins out when an understanding youth offers her the lovo she rightfully deserves. 1 Way Down East,’ which was produced by Winfield Sheehan and directed by Henry King, presents Rochelle Hudson and Henry Fonda in the leading romantic roles. In the supporting cast are Slim Summerville, Andy Devine, Edward Trevor, and Margaret Hamilton. ‘ King Solomon of Broadway,’ the supporting film, contains a well-executed piece of acting by Edmund l Lowe as the proprietor of a Broadway night club who is caught between two rival sets of “ gangsters.” Quick thinking and a fair amount of action are included iii his role. Dorothy Page, whose voice is well known frc*n her singing over the air, shows that she is an actress as well as a singer, white several new songs reveal her taints to full advantage. Pinky Tomlin joins Alias Page in concerted numbers which give the tale a tuneful musical background.
