EFFECT OF NEW VALUATION DRAINAGE LEVY REDUCED OVfR £7OO When advice was received at last night's St. Kilda Council meeting in respect of the rates struck by the Drainage Board for the current year, it was reported that, under the borough’s new valuation recently completed, last year’s levy for this purpose of approximately £7,300 would be reduced by over £7OO. Present at the meeting were Mr J. J. Marlow (mayor) and Crs George Glue. \V. J. Davidson, J. H. Hinton, R. S. Brent, T. D. B. Roy, N. D. Anderson, J. C. Cherry, W. J. Lovell, J. A. Cameron, and W. Rutherford. ST.G2sPOSTING STREETS. The Precision .Engineering Company Ltd. (Wellington) submitted quotes for the manufacture of street name plates, similar to those supplied to the Wellington City Corporation. Cr Hinton reported having inspected the street signs of the borough and recommended the purchase of 31 new plates at the price cpiotcd, £lO 0s l()d. Painted signs were neither suitable nor lasting, ho added. It was agreed that the designation of streets was not satisfactory, and when Cr Carman suggested that it, was not desirable that the council should economise in the matter, it was explained that expense might at least he trebled, but there was really no object iu providing a surfeit of signs. It was decided to order the signs as recommended. REVENUE INCREASES. Revenue increases produced since Jus appointment in May, 1931, were revealed in a special report submitted by the borough inspector. Greatest revenue was accrued from traffic licensing, which had produced an increase of £54 ss—£l9B 5s (793 licenses) in 1930-31, as against £252 10s (1,010) in 1935-3 G. In addition to these figures, other revenue, which had not been assessed, included that collected from heavy traffic licenses, building permits, and hawkers’ licenses. It was finally suggested that the time was opportune for the provision of a by-law providing for the annual licensing of all shops where food was sold and also of stables. GENERAL. The annual grant of sgs to the St. John Ambulance Association was approved. A refund of portion of the amount paid for ball hire for its recent jubilee dance was granted to the Ocean Beach group of the Boy Scouts’ Association.
