Public meetings in the Tunpeka district have declared in favour of the proposal of the Waitahuna Farmers’ Club that the Government should bring in a Bill to enable them to pay 3d each for rahbitskins. The general impression seems to he that the present system of inspection is expensive and ineffective. * » * * The Defence Minister has accepted the services of the High School Cadet Corps, which is 70 strong and is captained by Mr Morrison, the English master, with Messrs Hogg and Poison as lieutenants. * * * * According to an ‘ Argus ’ telegram, the composition of the English cricket team to visit the colonics next season has been altered. W. G. Grace lias been asked to accompany the team, which will now include Shaw. Shrewsbury. Barnes. Briggs, Gunn. Flowers, Bairs. Doe, Preston, and Lohmann. They sail in September. * * * * The Invercargill tramways have been sold for £3.000. They have proved a huge financial failure in the hands of a company. * * * * A railway passenger was guilty of an astounding piece of carelessness at Mosgiel on the 28th ult. He actually left a loaded gun with a hammer fully cocked lying on a seat, and at a time when the station was crowded with people. Strange to say, in the long list of railway by-laws there is not one dealing with such an act of criminal negligence ; otherwise a summons would have been taken out against the individual mentioned. * * * * The Rev. Bruce Todd has accepted a call from the Macraes and Strath. Taieri Presbyterian congregation.
