AUCKLAND CREW PERFORMS WELL
TWO MILES COVERED IN GOOD TIME In the eight-oar challenge race at Tauranga for the Somerville Shield the Tauranga Club crew (holders) successfully withstood a challenge by a West End combination during the week-end, when rowing conditions were ideal, and the race over a course of approximately two miles was rowed in excellent time, Tauranga winning by a length. After 250yds the local crew held a small lead. Both crews settled down, rowing 36 strokes to the minute, but Tauranga s powerful crew managed to increase its lead to a length. . t ... ... The Tauranga crew is that which will represent Auckland in the interprovincial eight-oar championship contest at Wanganui on Saturday. Its personnel includes S. Smith (stroke), J. H. Plummer (7), M. Hartnett (6), P. Sanders (5) G. Fogerty (4), H. Payment (3), R. Tonkin (2), and J. T. Plummer (bow).
