AUSTRALIA’S LEAD

I FINAL CRICKET TEST FIKGLETON 117 NOT OUT GRIMMETT'S GREAT BOWLING Pi ess Association —By Telegraph—Copyright DURBAN, February 29. M'Cormick soon finished off the Africans' iunings, and then Fingleton and Brown once again gave a splendid start for Australia, scoring 162 for the first wicket. The weather was at first overcast and muggy and the wicket had every appearance of being easy. Viljoen just got his bat to a high bumping bail which spun back high for Chipperheld in the second slip to take an easy catch. Nine for 220. The end came when Davies was bowled by M'Cormick without playing the ball. Ten for 222. Grimmett finished with the excellent analysis of seven for 100. Fingleton and Brown faced the fast opening attack, which was shared by Davies and Crisp. The batsmen went along confidently and were not worried by changes in the bowling. They took 12 off Balaskas's over before lunch. Crisp bowled the leg theory, four men being on the leg side, close in. Fingleton was nearly out when 32, when he snicked a ball to the leg side of the wicketkeeper, who failed to hold a difficult catch. Brown, when 62, reached his 1,000 runs for the tour. Runs came freely before tea, and when the Australian score was 161 Brown scooped up a ball to Langton at cover. Brown had batted in cool, effortless style. M'Cabe soon went,' returning a simple catch to Mitchell. O'Brien should have been out before scoring, snicking a ball from Mitchell, but the wicketkeeper (Vandermerwe) failed to hold it. Fingleton continued to gather runs at a faster pace, 10 coming from, one over by Balaskas. An appeal against the light was upheld, and stumps were drawn about 5 p.m. Scores: — SOUTH AFRICA.
