SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

(From our Balclutha Correspondent.) March 2, 1936. CRICKET. —South Otago Retain Crosby Morris Cup.— On Saturday, on the Balclutha ground, a match was played between teams representative of South Otago and Tuapeka for the Crosby Morris Cup, held by South Otago. The weather was dull and light rain fell during different stages of the game, making the bowling rather difficult. Tuapeka, captained by Edie, won the toss, and sent South Otago (captained by W. Hampton) to the wickets. The opening batsmen made a good showing, although the South Otago skipper was dismissed for 11, the first wicket falling with 22 on. Baxter and Vinnicombo carried on, and 112 was scored before a separation was effected. Baxter knocked up 4G, including seven 4’s, and Vinnicombe’s 54 included seven 4’s and a beautiful 6, the ball going into the show grounds. _ Gold batted well for his 74. which included 14 4’s. With five wickets down for 219, South Otago looked like making a big score, but a rot set in and the remaining batsmen were dismissed for 15 runs, Templeton being deadly with the ball. He secured the fine average of five wickets for 21 runs. Caffell took three for 52,. and the others wickets were taken by Edie and Rush. Tuapeka opened badly and the first wicket fell with no score. Four were down for 25, when Templeton and Caffoll started a partnership which yielded 43 runs before the latter was dismissed. He contributed a useful 22, including three 4’s. The remaining batsmen went cheaply to the bowling of North. Templeton was still unbeaten when the innings dosed for 120. He made 60 runs, nine 4’s being included. North bowled exceptionally well to get seven wickets for 55 runs, and Guest took two for 37. Gold kept wickets well and not an extra was recorded. The fielding of both teams was good, the visitor, if anything, being slightly better than the home team in this department. At the conclusion of the game Mr L. J. Edwards, president of the South Otago Association, handed the cup to the South Otago skipper and congratulated both teams on the fine sporting spirit in which the match was played. Messrs Edie and Edgar replied for Tuapeka. and incidentally thanked the South Otago Association for the hospitality extended, and congratulated them on retaining the cup. Mr Hampton also spoke. At the meeting of the Clutha branch of the Fanners’ Union on Saturday night a discussion took place on the idea of collecting subscriptions on a valuation basis, but the decision arrived at was that the present system of LI per year was the best. It was also decided to instruct the secretary to forward the following resolution to the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Otago Privincial Council That the Clutha River Board, owing to the advent of motor lorries, has outlived its usefulness, and is not using the revenue derived from endowments for the purpose for which they were granted, and it is therefore deemed necessary to ask for an inquiry by Royal Commission into the manner in which the River Board is expending its revenue and to decide how much revenue shall he expended in the future.” Mr A. Jensen was appointed to represent the branch at a representative meeting of those interested in river affairs to be held on March 11 at Stirling. SWIMMING. The South Otago High School pupils bold their annual swimming sports during the week, when an interesting programme was gone through. The various championships wore won by M. Rev. V. C. Thomas, who has been Methodist minister at Kaitangata for some time, has been appointed to the Auckland district, and leaves at the r

end of March. Mr Thomas has made himself very popular in Kaitangata and district, and general regret will be felt at his departure.
