WAITEPEKA TRAGEDY

DEATH OF WILLIAM BEATTY INQUEST OPENED An inquest touching the death of William Beatty, who died at Balclutha Hospital on Sunday morning as a result of injuries alleged to have been inflicted by a neighbour, Hugh Urqubart Neil Gunn, at Waitepeka on Saturday night, was opened at the Balclutha Courthouse last evening before Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M. (district coroner). Detective-sergeant Hall acted on behalf of the police, and Mr J. T. Walter watched proceedings on behalf of deceased’s relatives. Arthur James Benjamin Beatty, employed on his parents’ farm at .Waitepeka, said he had identified the body lying at the Balclutha Hospital morgue as that of his father, William Beatty, who was a farmer living with his wife at Waitepeka. There was a family of four sons and two daughters. His father was 70 years of age.

Detective-sergeant Hall said that this concluded the evidence it was proposed to call at this stage, and asked that the inquest be adjourned sine die. Adjourned accordingly.
