SPORT IN SOUTH OTAGO

(From Our Balclutha Correspondent.) PICNIC”SPORTS. The sports gathering held on the Balclutha racecourse on Saturday proved an entertaining one. The weather was fine and there was a large attendance, the gate totalling just over £2O. Had the previous days been fine and people sure that the function was going on the attendance would have been even greater. The racing provided exciting finishes. The _ cycling events drew good fields and a high standard of riding was seen for the most part. The tracks were in good order, and the committee is to be congratulated on the success attending its ef-. forts. The officials for the day were: — President, Mr Drew Miller; secretary, Mr R. Culbert; treasurer, Mr C. O’Hara; clerk of course, Mr Geo: Houliston; clerk of scales, Dir M. Low; judge, Mr G. Maze; time-keeper, Mr C. Wood; starter, Mr J. Bilzon; stewards —Messrs W. Duff, 0. Throp, J. M‘Gillivray, W. Twaddle, W. Telford, P. Clent, W. Hutchins (handicapper). The members of the Balclutha and Kaitangata Cycling Clubs officiated in this connection. The Balclutha Pipe Band was present and enlivened proceedings with their playing. Everyone considered the meeting a good one and expressed the hope that it would become an annual event. Caldwell’s Major Hadie (Owner) 1 Lex Reid’s Chiming Wrack (W. Grey) 2 Also competed: J. E. Smith’s Homelight, R. Wilson’s Major, and Lex Reid. This event proved quite interesting. Major Hadie soon took the lead, but was challenged by Chiming Wrack near home. Miss Gladys Wilson rode a good race to finish third. , At a meeting of the committee, held at night, the secretary presented a balance sheet showing that the receipts had just been sufficient to meet, outgoings. This was considered satisfactory, and thanks were expressed to all who had, assisted in making the day ji success. The receipts totalled £29 ,1/s 6d, and the expenditure came to the same, the chief item being £22 15s for prizes. CRICKET. In the match Clutha A v. Owaka, the Clutha team made 251 runs. Gold was top scorer with 72 retired. His score included 10 4’s. Baxter made 52, including five 4’s, Swinton 41 retired (six 4’s and two 6’s), L. Guest 10, Stephens 19 retired, Dunn 15, Milne 19 not out, and “Extras” 16 were the other double-figure batsmen. Chap-man-Cohen (four for, 34) was Owaka a most successful bowler. Owaka replied with 140, Harper topping the score with 65. Johnstone 25, M Lellan 14 not out, and M'Phee 11 were the only others to make a stand. Guest (three wickets for 60 runs). Baxter (three for 29), Swinton (two for 33), and Milne (one for 12) divided the wickets. High School (154 for seven wickets), defeated Clutha T 3 122. For School, Stewart 63, Espie 25 retired, Duncan 15 not out, and “ Extras ” 23, were the principal scorers. Hill (two wickets for 30 runs), Moffat (two for 30), and Frengley (one for 22) divided bowling honours.
