UNEMPLOYMENT

SOUTH DUNEDIH ASSOCIATION The fortnightly meeting of the South Dunedin Unemployed Association was held on Wednesday last. The chairman (Mr F. Hooper) presided over a good attendance of members. Correspondence from Hon. H. T. Armstrong, the chairman-of the’Reserves Committee, and Mr W. Lowe and family was received. A deputation consisting of Messrs F. Taylor, W. M'Queen, and P. Hr Petrie was appointed to wait on the chairman of the Reserves Committee. The secretary and Messrs M‘Queen and Petrie reported concerning the deputation which was appointed to wait On the City Council at its last meet, and, as the necessary arrangements had not been made for its reception, it was decided to instruct the original deputation to carry out its instructions and wait on the local authority at the next meeting. Two vacancies on the executive were filled by the election of Messrs Harwood and Robertson. Messrs M'Ewen. Goodlet, and Moir were added to the Concert Committee. The general secretary, in reporting for the Concert Committee, referred to the success attained bv the concert held in the local Town Hall on February 16, and asked for a grant to enable the committee to stage another entertainment on March 1, the necessary permit haying been granted by the City Council. This matter was referred to the executive to deal with. The notice of motion which was tabled at the preceding general meeting came up for discussion, and after having been considered at some length was put to the vote, and, although the vote, which was taken on a show of hands, demonstrated the fact that the majority of those present were in favour of the proposed change, the motion was nevertheless lost owing to a technicality in the constitution requiring a two-thirds majority to carry any such proposal. The consideration of an amendment to rule 3 of the constitution was deferred until the next general meeting, to be held on Wednesday, March 4.
