TAR BLAZE
DAMAGE TO PAVEMENT COMPANY'S PLANT [Special to the ‘ Stas.’] OAMARU, February 24. A spectacular conflagration which lib’ up the countryside for miles around occurred at, Glenavy early this morning, when fire broke out in one of th» tar kettles belonging to Pavements Ltd., causing damage estimated at over £I,OOO. The blaze was first noticed at 2.30 a.m., and, although assistance was quickly forthcoming, the fire soon, attained spectacular proportions, the flames reaching a height of 40ft; and, : despite the efforts of residents and employees, practically the whole of the tar containers were destroyed, besides other machinery. , The outbreak was ( due to the tar boiling over and catching fire, owing to much water having got into the tar containers. The tar, which was being heated in readiness for the day’s work, boiled up quicker than usual, and before the man on duty was aware the bitumen was burning fiercely.
