DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB

Cup Meeting Commences To-morrow

An Interesting Day’s Racing Promised

The Dunedin Cup Meeting, once one of the three most important racing fixtures in the colony, and again gradually regaining its. importance on the racing calendar, will commence at Wingatui to-morrow, and the presence of practically the best horses in commission promises to make it one of the best meetings ever held at this centre. Last night’s heavy, ram was quickly absorbed by the track, and it promises to be in first-class order for to-morrow. THE CARD. 12.45

THE CUP. THREE-YEAR-OLDS FAVOURED. . The field for the Dunedin Cup promises to be one of the best seen at Wingatui for many years, and is headed by Silver Ring with 10.4, a weight that has never been carried to victory in the long history of the race. There is hf> doubt regarding Silver Ring’s class, but there is always a breaking point, and to carry such a big impost the luck of the running will have to be with him every yard of the mile and a-half, and the law of averages is against him establishing a fresh weightcarrying record. Osculate, who will be receiving 24ib from Silver Ring, is fully entitled to his, 8.8. and is one of the proved stayers' in' the field. He won the Otago Handicap at Christmas time under 9.0 in 2min Bsec, beating a good field. Kinnoull, with 8.6. has 51b more than weight-for-age, and has been handicapped at that weight more on defeats than wins. He should have won the Derby at Ricearton last November, finishing close, up fourth to Lowenberg, Greek Shepherd, and Heritage. At weight-for-age he showed the Derby form to be wrong by beating Cuddle and Heritage in the Canterbury Cup, run over a mile and a-half. At the recent "Wellington Meeting he finished third under 8.5 to Queen of Song 7.6 and Silver Rnig 9.9 in the Cup, and on the third day second to in the Trentham Stakes. If the going should be heavy Kinnoull will be the hardest horse to beat. Another highclass three-year-old in Greek Shepherd has 21b less than Kinnoull. The latter beat Greek Shepherd in the Dunedin Guineas last October. A fortnight later Greek Shepherd won the Wainui Handicap at Trentham in heavy going from a good field. He was second to Lowenberg in the N.Z. Derby, and beat Floodtide, Heritage, and five Others in the Great ' Northern Derby. Since then he has not raced, but his gallop with Silver Ring last Saturday shows him to be well, and he offers the most dangerous opposition to Kinnoull. He, too, can handle heavy going. Since Golden King won the Ricearton Handicap at the New Zealand Cup Meeting he has not raced well, and in the Midsummer Handicap Hast Saturday was unable to handle the heavy going. He is well just now, and if the going is firm should run well. Tout le Monde won the Liverpool Handicap, 10 furlongs, on the concluding day of the Manawatu Meeting last December and ran second in the Strnt-

ford Cup, also 10 furlongs, under 9.0 the following week. He does not handle heavy going well, but put up a good race at lliccarton last Saturday, and must be given a chance. Sunee, who looks as fit as hands can make' him. failed in the Wellington Cup under 7.3, and meets Kinnoull on the same terms again. Senior had 7.4 in the Wellington Cup and meets Kinnoull on only lib better terms, but it must be remembered that he finished second in the Auckland Cup to Cuddle, who won by five lengths in record time. Amy Johnson’s preparation was checked after meeting with an accident at Wyndham. Tizzy on performances has no credentials to be fancied over a mile and a-half, but there is good staying blood in her veins. Honest Maid has been winning under big imposts in hack company, but the class in this ■race is a little beyond her. Trivet at 7.2 is one of the light-weight possibilities, and if the distance of the Tapanui Handicap was correct her performance in carrying 10.0 and being beaten by only a length and a-half in 2ram 5 4-osec was an excellent trial. Trivet has already won ■ 15 races, and finished second in' the Oaks Stakes to Sweet Agnes, so should be able to see out the distance. Horn’s Reef ran two good races in the open 10-furlong events at the Invercargill Meeting, but not against the same class as he will meet to-morrow. Blazon and Snperex have not yet shown any ability to stay over 10 furlongs. With the luck of the running the handicap will favour the three-year-; olds, and the favourites are likely to be:— GREEK SHEPHERD or KINNOULL. OSCULATE. SENIOR. THE OTHER EVENTS. WARRINGTON HURDLES. Arctic Star won the Brush Hurdle race at lliccarton last Saturday very easily, and if he was correctly handicapped originally for the Warrington Hurdle race a penalty of 21b for the win is ridiculous. At the Christmas Meeting he had 141 b from Black Duke and beat him easily, establishing a new track record. Black Duke has not started since. For beating him once Arctic Star was handicapped to meethim on 101 b worse terms, and on only 121 b after winning again; The field last Saturday was not a good one, nor is to-morrow’s, and Arctic Star should account for Black Duke again. The Smuggler is not sufficiently seasoned, Sunward is a- doubtful starter as he pulled up lame after last Saturday’s race. Linoleum is a poor fencer, and Royal Pal, .though working well, may, lack ■ experience. Ghrysology raced well at the Christmas Meeting, winning in fast time on the first day. He looks the most likely to trouble Arctic Star, and the order of favouritism is likely to be;— ARCTIC STAR. GHRYSOLOGY. BLACK DUKE. THE TRIAL HANDICAP. Until the Trial Plate was run at Riccarton last Saturday the Trial Handicap bore a very open appearance, but the placed performances of Last Refrain and Rival Shot places them in the limelight in the field they will meet to-morrow. Last Refrain will meet Rival Shot on 111 b better terms than she did last Saturday, and at this distance should turn the tables. Of the others. Strathosphere and Fireguard have also placed performances to their credit, but Fireguard has raced badly lately. Wild Career has finished on well in each of his races, and should be well suited by the extra furlong. The best fancied are likely to be: — LAST REFRAIN. RIVAL SHOT WILD CAREER or STRATHOSPHERE. THE BERWICK HANDICAP. Top Coat was racing in open company at the southern holiday meetings, but excepting at Wyndham, where he finished second to Silk Paper, his form was not good, and with 9.6 he.has been set a severe task in the Berwick Hack Handicap. Final Bell has raced badly lately. Surge’s performances have been good this summer, and in winning over a mile and 100yds at Tapanui with 10.6 she showed good form, and with 271 b ofE her back she must be given a chance. Silver Jest raced badly last Saturday, but may do bettor on firmer going. Violehta lias not yet shown ability to see out seven furlongs. Silver Lark was beaten by Surge at the Vincent Meeting when in receipt of 171 b. Surge has won since, and noV meets Silver Lark on 61b better terms. Linguist has failed to race up to expectations since winning over six furlongs at Riccarton last Easter. Concertpitch won well over seven furlongs . at Riccarton on Saturday, and in being penalised only 51b has certainly not been harshly treated. Vantoon won a highweight handicap at the Vincent Meeting. but raced badly the following day. Night Gem has not shown any form, but if Rival Shot is reserved for this race instead of starting in the Trial Handicap she would have to be considered when looking for the winner. The best fancied are likely to be; CONCERTPITCH. SURGE. SILVER JEST. THE PUBLICANS’ HANDICAP, After his recent successes at Trentham Silver Streak was assured of a big impost in the Publican’s Handicap, and with 9.9 will find the task set him a very severe one. Knockfin showed she is returning to form by running second to Fracas in the Craven Plate last Saturday, and at the end of six _ furlongs she would have been the winner. Invoice has recent form id the North Island to recommend him. but at a difference of 41b Knockfin beat him easily last Saturday. and they meet on the same terms in this race. After effecting a surprise win at the Banks Peninsula Meeting a week before Davolo ran second to Knockfin in the Stewards’ Handicap, both carrying 7.13. He showed himself to be well by finishing second in the Midsummer Handicap on Saturday. Fair Weather meets Knockfin on 31b bettor terms than in the Craven Plate, and the mare should hold him safe again. Rebel Chief, when well, is brilliant, but was a non-

starter in the Craven Plate and is reported to be not quite at his best Great Star won well at Oamaru, but the class is better in. this race, and age must be now dimming his brilliance when up against high-class sprinters. Cranford ran well in the Craven Plate, but meets Knockfin on 21b worse terms. Cherry Queen has always found six furlongs just too far for her when up against top-class sprinters. Capital is another that is likely to find the class too good. After a long spell Lochlaggan made her re-appearance at the Invercargill Meeting last month, winning the Short’s Handicap with 7.10 m fast time. She appears to have returned to the form she showed a couple ot seasons ago, and at 7.2 has been leniently treated. Vnlarth, Song Boy, Penelope, and Arden’s Beauts' are now in a class they have not met before and do not appeal. Beam has not raced well this season, and, though a smart beginner, she will have to show marked improvement to have any chance. Cheap Money ran a good race in the Craven Plate and was first into the straight. Last year this mare won three races in succession at the Wyndham and Invercargill Meetings, and appears to be now returning to that form. The chances of the horses in this big field of 17 will be affected by the draw for positions at the barrier, and the race hears an open appearance, with preference for: KNOCKFIN. LOCHLAGGAN. DAVOLO or CHEAP MONEY. THE CHAMPAGNE STAKES. The Champagne Stakes has attracted only a small field, but what is missing in numbers is made up in quality. Wild Chase won so well at Riccarton last Saturday, that he is sure to he started at a short price. He meets Gustos on 41b better terms than last Saturday, and should account for the locally-owned colt again. Epic stopped badly at the end of five furlongs on Saturday } and so did Double Gut. Pelmet had not done much work prior to Saturday’s race, and it would do her good. Cerne Abbas, who will be bracketed with Gustos, has beqn racing badly. The best backed should be:— WILD CHASE. PELMET. , , , GUSTOS—CERNE ABBAS bracket. THE STEWARDS’ HANDICAP. If The Surgeon is reserved for the President’s Handicap, a nice field ot 11 is likely to go to the post. Grand Finale, who heads the handicap with 92, won the Wyndham Cup in fast time, but he does not carry weight well: Plato won over a mile at 1 rentham last month in Imin 38fsec with only 51b less than he is set to carry to-morrow. M‘Heath failed badly at Riccarton on Saturday, but was asked a big question in being rushed to the front with 9.4 on his back, and is likely'to do better in to-morrow s race. Rin Tin Tin, on recent form, is badly handicapped. All Humbug is probably the best handicapped horse in the held, and his recent form suggests him as the likely winner. Srilnio Salar ran seconcl in’ the Invercargill Cup to Queen of Song, but had only 7.0, and a rise of 161 b will steady him. Toreador does not appeal, but Daring Deed has been racing consistently _ well this season, and is very well just now. Enwood won over a mile at the Clitden Meeting, hut was lucky to beat All .Humbug and has no chance of doing it again at a difference of 21b. Gottmghtm finished on well into , third place at Riccarton on Saturday and meets M‘Heath on 71b better terms. Knocklong won on the West Coast, but is up against a better class in this race. The best fancied may be:— ALL HUMBUG. PLATO. -DARING DEED. 9 THE PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. Mary Pratt is reported to be a doubtful starter in the President’s Hack Handicap, and The Surgeon, with a very lenient penalty of 51b for his good win at Riccarton last Saturday, will be top weight with 9.0. A- very consistent winner since the New Year, he promises to be hard to beat again. Mount Val likes the going heavy, and has ‘no recent form to recommend him. Golden Lap will be up against much better company than he lias been racing with in Southland. If Queen Dorothy is back to the form she showed in the early spring she will be troublesome. Ocean Singer has now won at his last three starts, and is the most improving hack in Southland. His last success was m the Tapanui Handicap, in which, with 7.4 i, he beat Trivet, 10.0, a length and a-half, in 2min 5 4-ssec. Latitude is reported to be galloping well, but will require a firm track to show his best form. Aro Arc, Pala Melba, and Te Ahaurangi have little to recommend them, but should Sisterina reproduce the run which won her the Kia Ora Handicap at the Winton Winter Meeting last July she would take a power of beating. She fairly revels in heavy going. The order of favouritism may THE SURGEON. OCEAN SINGER. LATITUDE (if fine) or SISTERINA if heavy going.

THE FINAL GALLOPS GREEK SHEPHERD SHAPES WELL . The heavy thunderstorm last night gave the course at Wingatui another good soaking, but it was just what the track required. For the early workers this morning it was slightly holding, but the atmospherical conditions were pleasant. During the breakfast spell a cold strong southerly wind got up. It had the effect of quickly improving the going, but was right in the face of the horses as they raced up the back stretch. The outside of the course proper was available for fast work, and two-year-olds were allowed to run down the centre of the course. Rival Shot and Wild Chase used the latter course, and finished together at the end of half a mile in 51 4-ssec. Plato, working by himself, took 53sec fr- f, ’e same journey on the outside of the track. ,Liiior, a.so by himself, took 56 3-ssec, but he appears to be a bad track worker. Sunee, Greek Shepherd, and The Surgeon finished in that order at the end of a gallop over seven furlongs m Imin 34sec, the last five taking Imm 10 2-ssec. Though Sunee was a head in front at the post it looked as if Greek Sheoherd was doing best. The Surgeon did well to be less than a length awav at the finish. • Concertpitch took 54 4-ssec to run four furlongs, but was doing it comfortably all the way. . Cerne Abbas finished just in front of Gustos at the end of five furlongs on the middle of the course in Imin ssec, the last four in 52 2-ssec. Gustos appearecl to bo going the better of the Knockfiu cantered round to the halfmile post, then sprinted over the first four furlongs in 55 l-3soc, but could have gone faster.

Strathospherc had slightly the better of a gallop over five furlongs with Night Gem, the last four furlongs taking 55 4-ssec. Davolo was not extended to run half a mile in 59 2-ssec. He was going easily within himself nearly all the way. Queen of Song easily held Superex at the end of seven furlongs, which took them Imin 37 2-ssee. Amy Johnson had Hula Belle for a mate in a gallop over nine furlongs, the former winning easily in _ 2min 14 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 57 3-ssec. Tizzy was given half-pace on the inside grass track, and sprinted home the last four furlongs in 56 4-ssec. Arden’s Beauty worked alone over four furlongs in 56 4-ssec. Latitude and Cottingham finished together over seven furlongs in Imin 36see, the last four in 56sec. Latitude’s effort was a good one. After breakfast Ratui beat Lumiere over half a mile in the' centre of the track in 52 l-ssec. Epic and Fair Weather both took 53sec to run four furlongs on the outside of the course, the first named galloping very attractively. Shock and Daring Deed finished together over six furlongs in Imin 23 l-ssec.

Golden King, looking none the worse for his race at Riccarton on Saturday, ran six furlongs, the last five in Imin llsec.

Te Ahaurangai ran five furlongs in Imin 11 l-ssec. Wild Career was going as well as Simon Peter over three furlongs in 40 2-ssec. Song Bird, moving much better than on the previous morning, was ridden out to run half a mile in 53 2-sr°c. Sunny Jean showed improved form 1 • running half a mile in 55sec in a very fine manner.

Kinnoull, ridden by his trainer, was trotted and cantered about the inside of the course, and finished up a couple of rounds of slow work by sprinting over the last three furlings in 41 3-ssec without being hurried. This three-year-old is very well just now, and will probably start favourite in the Cup to-morrow. . , Top Coat was worked on the inside grass track, and allowed to run along over the last two furlongs. Beam, looking very well, was going well within herself over five furlongs in Imin 10 l-ssec. The Smuggler and Royal Pal acquitted themselves well over two flights of the schooling hurdles along the back. The Smuggler’s efforts were particularly good. Knocklong took 55sec to run half a mile. Most of the visiting horses are now at Winsntui, and a large number were let off with half and three-quarter-pace work. SCRATCHINGS. Rona Bay was scratched for all engagements. at the Dunedin Cup Meeting at 10.35 a.m. to-day. Rebel Chief was scratched at 11.5 a.m. to-day for the Publicans’ Handicap.
