M.C.C. TOUR MATCH AGAINST TARANAKI (Per United Press Association.] NEW PLYMOUTH, January 27. A match was commenced at Pukckura Park, New Plymouth, this morning between the touring M.C.C. team and Taranaki. The weather is fine and the outfield is at its best, and the wicket is in good order. There was a good attendance at the commencement of the game. A Union Jack, with a pennant of crepe above it, flew at halfmast over the flag of the M.C.C., of which the King was Patron. E. R. T. Holmes (the captain), J. H. Parkes, and W. Barber were omissions from the visiting side, all on account of minor injuries, and in the absence of Holmes the side was led by the Hon. J. C. Lyttelton, who won the toss and decided to bat. . W. A. Priest led Taranaki. J. M. Sims and D. Smith opened for the visitors, the M.C.C. players wearing black armlets. Sims took strike at the terrace end to Christensen, who sent down a maiden over to the Middlesex man. S. Betts, at the other end, sent down another maiden.
