STATISTICS OF THE TOUR

STRENUOUS TIME FOR GILBERT

A feature of the tour of the All Blacks is the fact that Gilbert, the fullback, played in all of the games except two, a very fine record, although it does not eclipse that of George Nepia, of the 1924 All Blacks, who took the field in every one of the 28 games played by that side. King, wlio played in 24 of the games, must have had a very strenuous time for a forward, while Mitchell, Oliver, and Caughey seem to have been the mainstay of the backs. Perhaps the most unfortunate part of the tour was that Page, who was recognised as the best five-eighth of tile side, was injured early in the tour, and was able to play in only three games. His loss must have been felt very considerably, as it necessitated the rearrangement of the whole of the back line.

A comparison of the scores of the 1905, 1924, and . 1935 All Blacks shows:—

1905 All Blacks (32 Games). —Points for 830, points against 39. Matches won 31, lost 1. 1924 All Blacks (28 Games). —Points for 654, against 98. Matches won 28. 1935 All Blacks (28 Games). —Points for 431, points against 180. Matches won 24, lost 3, drawn 1. Individual members of the team played in the following number of games on the tour: —Gilbert 26, King 24, Mitchell 22, Oliver 21, Lambourne 21, Manchester 20, Caughey 20, Reid 19, Hart 19, Ball 16, Griffiths 16, Mahoney 16, Pepper 16.
