(Received January 6, ajb 10 a.m.) The first weekly transatlantic air mail was inaugurated by an Air Franco plane which departed from Croydon for Santiago via Toulouse, Dakar, Brazil, and Buenos Aires—9,36s miles —for which the schedule is four days, which is the fastest long-distance flight in the world. The Atlantic will be flown with four-engined flying boats evolved after lengthy experiments. The mail service is the first step to a passenger service in which a 17-ton flying boat providing sleeping accommodation for crossing the Atlantic in 15 hours will bo used. Miss Jean Batten sent a message to the undertaking wishing it good luck.
