PILOT LAUNCHES COLLIDE

ARAHINA SERIOUSLY DAMAGED [Per United Press Association.] • WELLINGTON, January 5. A serious mishap necessitating beaching her hurriedly to save her from sinking befell the Harbour Board’s large pilot' launch Arahina in Evans Bay this morning, the vessel being involved in a collision with the second pilot launch Uta. The arrival of four overseas ships and departure of the tanker Ahamo, all requiring the services of pilots, created heavy pressure on the harbourmaster’s staff, and both launches were actively engaged about the harbour. No official ' information is obtainable, and the actual cause of the mishap therefore cannot be stated. It is known, however, that the Arahina was_ seriously damaged. She was beached in Balena Bay, where she now lies. Salvaging will probably be undertaken to-mor-row.
