SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

(From Our Balclutha Correspondent.)

January 6. Very dry weather has been experienced throughout this district of late, and the past week-end was very warm, being admirable for those holidaying at Kaka Point, Pounawea, and other resorts in the district. Yesterday motor traffic was very heavy, a large number of people returning to their homes. There is still, however, a big number in residence at the beaches,_ and when one crowd leaves others arrive to take their place. The demand for houses at both Kaka Point and Pounawea has been heavy this year, the fine weather evidently inducing more to spend their holidays at these places. _ The motor camp at Balclutha was particularly well patronised during the week-end, several families spending a day or two there in pleasant surroundings. The fine weather has allowed farmers to get well on with shearing operations, which are now well ad.vanced. Some very fine crops are also to be seen in different parts, some of them being almost ready for cutting. There is still plenty of feed about, but a shower of rain would be welcome, as things are now very dry. In places where the water supply is dependent on tanks there is a shortage, and carting from creeks and rivers is now the order. Some of these, too, are showing signs of the dry spell, and are very low. The Stirling Dairy Factory Company has sold the December output of approximately 60 tons at 6d per lb,_ a very satisfactory price, and one which should allow a decent payout to suppliers. The rainfall registered in Balclutha for 1935 totalled 29.35 in. The heaviest fall was in June, when 5.26 in were registered. Heavy falls -were also experienced in January (4.04 in) and March (4.43 in). The lowest fall occurred in July, when only .56in was registered. The fall registered in Owaka was 40.61 in, rain falling on 179 days. Vital statistics for the year were;— Balclutha: Births 109 (1934, 105), deaths 54 (42), marriages 32 (33). Owaka: Births 44 (44), deaths 16 (25), marriages 16 (13). Kaitangata: Births 31, deaths 7, marriages 4. Rev. E. M. Enwright, who has been supplying the pulpit of the Owaka Baptist Church since the resignation of Rev, S. J. Gilbert owing to ill-health, has been offered and accepted the pastorate, and will be inducted in February. Major E. Calcott, who has been in charge of the Salvation Array at Balclutha for the past two years, has received orders to “ farewell.” His successor has not yet been announced. BOWLING.
