CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

GYLES AMD PIWBV LEVEL [Pro United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, January 4. In the chess championship the following are" the results of the adjourned games:— Kelling v. Baeyertz. Baeyertz adopted the French Defence, and in the opening bishops were changed off, both players castling on the queen side. Intermittent ■ exchanges prevented any heavy combination of forces, and the end game of two knights and rook on each side resulted in a draw. Abbott v. Gyles.—A Queen’s Pawn game was played, and there was good development of pieces on both sides, with Gyles, assuming the attack. Exchanges on the centre relieved Abbott, but Gyles continued the pressure (ovefboldly perhaps), and forced an exchange of queens. This Abbott managed to conduct with benefit to himself, though he did not follow the strongest line, and the game ended in a draw. Beyer r. Purdy.—Lx _ this Queen’s Pawn game Purdy obtained very free development with, a Franchetto position for the king’s bishop early. His middle game was a concentration upon Beyer’s queen side pawn, which Purdy won. With pawns well forward and king in support, Purdy made no mistake in the end game, and forced Beyer to resign. MINOR TOURNEY. —Eleventh Round.— > Fairburn beat Brown. Watt beat R. Christenson. Hutchings beat Hardy. Kirkwood beat Goldsmith. Langley beat H. Christenson.
