SOUTHLAND RACING CLUB

SUMMER MEETING SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDED GREAT SHOT WINS SOUTHLAND HANDICAP After a-few showers overnight and a dull morning,' the afternoon turned out very warm for tlie concluding day of the Southland Racing Club’s Summer Meeting, and there was an excellent attendance, the gate receipts being £433 5s 6cl, as compared with £368 lls 6d last year, and making a total of £1,053 10s 6d for the two days, as compared with £975 ss, an increase of £7B 5s 6d. The course was again in splendid order, and when Great Shot won the principal handicap he equalled the time record of 2min 6 l-sseo for the course, jointly held by Red Wink and Royal Saxon. ' ' Tlie racing was again interesting, but punters again had a bad time, only one first favourite scoring. Several of the finishes were very exciting, reflecting credit on the handicapping, and Mr Ireland’s placings were well received and promptly hoisted. The meeting was excellently managed, and will result very satisfactorily financially. Though the totalisator handled almost as much money as on the open-' ing day, punctuality was much more closely observed, and the last race started only 21min after the scheduled time, £14,559 10s (win £6,658 10s, place £7,901) being handled, as against £12,268 last year, making the total for the meeting £29,421 10s, as compared with £26,082 10s last year,—increase £3,339. ■ ' Mr Marshall was well tried out as a starter, and appeared to be hampered at times by a defective barrier. His work was only fair, and not nearly as good as at the .club’s Spring Meeting. Results:— GLADSTONE HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, HOsovs; second 20, third 10.
