TENNIS TITLES

MEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS ANDREWS BEATS MOON [Pm United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, January 3. Brilliant tennis was witnessed at Miramar to-day in the New Zealand championships. The singles semi-final between Andrews and Moon was an outstanding exhibition of hard baseline driving by Andrews, who in the first two sets was irresistible, scarcely missing a .stroke. His timing was perfect and his speed tremendous. He quite outplayed _ the slower moving Moon. His drives, backhand and forehand, went into the corners with machine-like accuracy. He did not defend Moon’s service, but hit it hard for aces. In the third set he ■ fell into errors in the, net by still forcing the attack, and Moon ran to a lead of 3-0. Andrews very wisely threw away the next three games so as to get the benefit of the 10 minutes’ rest. On resuming "he continued his hard driving, but Moon raised his own game arid by, slowing the pace and varying his length took the set with the loss '. of only two games. Ih the fourth set Andrews maintained his and put more vim than ever into ,his strokes, and, although Moon fought hard, nosed out a winner amidst great applause, the victory being immensely popular among the large gallery. 'The other semi-final between M Grath and Coombe was very one-sided, Coombe being outclassed in every department. The court was hard and fast, just suiting M'Grath, who was • not wasting any time. Coombe made some fine returns, and, fought all the - way, but he was out-paced, out-driven, out-volleyed,' out-served, and outsmashed. M'Grath put the ball, just where he liked, and when he liked. D. G. France and N. G. Sturt obtained a brilliant win over Moon 'and Angas after having two match points against them in the fourth set. France was the real hero of the match, and the best player of the four. His volleying and lob-volleying in the fifth set and his return of service were in the highest class. Sturt gave him adequate support. Angas and Moon sometimes found themselves slightly.mixed, but, they had periods of fine driving, smashing, and volleying. In the final of the women’s doubles the Poole sisters had a grand oppori tunity of winning the first set after picking up from 2-4 down to 4-all by enterprising play from the net, excellent lobbing, drivings volleying, and smashing. The opposition, however, resorted to perfect lobbing, and broke up the game of the Canterbury pair. Miss I. Poole especially falling into error. Pursuing the same tactics, Misses Nicholls and Beverley ran over the Canterbury-pair in the second set. Coombe and Miss N. Beverley had a great wm in the semi-final of the mixed doubles, beating E. D. Andrews and Miss T. Poole after.losing the second set, in which they held two match points. In'the third set also they had match points before ultimately winning. Coombe was enterprising at the net, and Miss Poole found his service difficult to handle. She had patches of steadiness when she lobbed and drove accurately, and. she also volleyed and smashed well on occasions, but she was patchy under the bombardment. Andrews’s return of service was consistently accurate and severe, but Coombe and Miss Beverley handled his drives confidently. Miss. Beverley played solid tennis and- missed very little. S, Painter,, of Wellington,, won the hoys’ singles by reason of his extreme steadiness and careful placing. _ These qualities also helped him to win the boys’, doubles and the mixed doubles. Miss M. Beverley was made to fight hard by Miss P. Cooke in the final of the girls’ singles. It was Miss Cooke’s great steadiness against Miss Beverley’s hard driving, particularly on the forehand. Miss Cooke did very poorly when drawn to the net. Results; — ' MEN’S SINGLES. SEMI-FINALS. V. B. M'Grath beat D. C. Coombe, 6-2, 6-2, 6.-1. E. D. Andrews beat E. F. Mjaon, 6- -6-2, 0-6, 2-6, 6-4.
