AMATEUR ATHLETICS

OTAGO CENTRE MEETING The Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association met last night, there being present rhe president (Mr Guy Tapley), Messrs K. Miller, E. C. Isaacs, B. R. M‘Kernan, L. Carter, T. T. M'indoe. C. VV. Clark. J. Gerken, R. Thompson, R. N. Watson. J. J. Morris, J. W. Johnson. R. 0. Johnson, L. M. Wright, G. Armishaw. and T. M. Brydone (lion, secretary). MISSING SHIELD FOUND. The secretary of the Canterbury Centre advised that the Queensland Jubilee Memorial Shield had come into its possession and had been forwarded to the New Zealand Council. As the result of a paragraph in the Press) that the shield was missing, a Christchurch jeweller discovered the trophy in his store room where it had evidently remained for some time. It was not known how the trophy was left at the shop concerned, their members being under the impression that the Otago team had taken the shield with it on its return from the 1932-33 New. Zealand championships. VICTORIAN ATHLETES. Letters were received from the three Victorian athletes who were invited by the Otago Centre to make a tour of Otago over the holidays. These were Gerald Backhouse, Howard Yates, and Fred Woodhouse ? , who expressed regret at their inability to make the trip on account of the clash of the dates with their own championships. The hope was expressed that the invitation would be extended at some later date. It was decided to write to the three athletes concerned asking if they would keep in view the acceptance of an invitation to tour Otago next season. It was decided also to write to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic AssOcaition and to the Victorian Amateur Athletio Association thanking them for their efforts in regard to the proposed tour. GENERAL. It was decided to hold evening meetings on January 8 and 15, and to, include a 300yds championship on the former date and a 75yds championship on the latter date. It was resolved that, following the scratch meeting on Saturday, further scratch meetings be held on January 18 and February 1. The Blazer Committee recommended that permission be granted to the following to purchase Otago honorary blazers: —Messrs G. Tapley (president), C. W. Clark, E. C. Isaacs, R. Thompson (vice-presidnet), T. M. Brydono (secretary), K. Miller (sports secretary), W. H. Masters (treasurer), A. T. M'lndoe, J. A. Bond, B. R. M‘Kernan, J. W. Holley, and C. K. Heaton. —The recommendation was adopted. Mr B. R. M'Kernan was appointed to represent the centre at the Roxburgh Club’s meeting on Boxing Day, and Mr _R. 0. Johnson at the Alexandra Caledonian Society’s meeting on New Year’s Day. T. F.' M'Donald was granted a transfer from Anglican to University. The Luggate Amateur Athletic Society applied for a. permit to hold an amateur meeting on New Year’s Day.—lt was decided to grant the necessary permission, subject to the rules of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association being strictly complied with. Sir Charles Statham and Mr F. M. Reid were appointed as the centre’s delegates on the New Zealand Council. Mr R. 0. Johnson was apointed to take charge of the centre’s field equipment. The Winton Sports Club made application for permission to include amateur running and cycling events, on its programmes at evening meetings m addition to the usual professional events. —The application was granted The Otaia Sports Club applied for permission to stage two amateur events on its programme on January 18.—Permission was granted. The Toko. Harrier and Amateur Athletic Club sought permission to hold its annual sports meeting at Milton on March 7 next.—The application was granted. The Southland Harrier and Amateur Athletic Association advised that the Southland championships would he held on January 25.—The date was approved, and Mr Guy Tapley was appointed as the centre’s official representative at the meeting. EVENING SPORTS MEETING The following handicaps have been declared 1 for the evening sports meeting to be held to-night at the Caledonian Ground. Cycling events will be interspersed through the programme, and a ladies’ sprint event will also be run.
