LABOUR’S OPPORTUNITY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —It is to be hoped that our Labour council will demonstrate its superior humane principles by the abolition of rules such as the one that deprives a labourer of his holiday pay if he has not been in constant work with the council over a stated period. In other words, a man is penalised for being unfortunate. Should he not get a little extra if there is to be any distinction at all P The position of men just placed on a five-day week job requires urgent attention unless they are to lose by accepting such work, which would be a distinct injustice. The council has probably been forced for financial reasons (to adopt or continue the practice of an incomplete week, which is neither one thing ■ nor the other. The men concerned are off relief but not-on full-time work. They are being made use of to carry on essential work, and it is to be hoped that the Labour council will act quickly and definitely to secure a fair deal for these men over the Christmas period. It is an opportunity to right a wrong. —I am, etc., 6. A; Herring. December 10.
