ARBITRATION COURT

INFORMAL SITTING ' APPLICATIONS FOR AWARDS In terms of the recommendations of the Conciliation Council, applications were made for awards at an informal sitting of the Arbitration Court this morning. Mr A. L. Montieth, workers’ representative, presided and explained that His Honour Mr Justice Page was confined to his bed in Napier with a chill, and it would be a few days before he would resume his duties. Mr W. Cecil Prime, employers’ representative, was absent due to a death in his family. As it had been previously decided to hold a short sitting here, it was proposed to comply with that decision in that the speaker would preside at an informal sitting. The matters brought up would bo taken to Wellington, and the awards made by the full court. In the Southland and Otago Cheese and Butter Factories’ dispute, Mr F. C. Templeton appeared for the employers, and Mr J. Robinson for the union. The latter stated that the workers had agreed to the recommendations, not because they liked the terms, but owing to the amendment to the I.C. and A. Act of 1932, they were forced to come to an agreement, or otherwise go without an award at all. In the matter of the Southland Operative Butchers’ dispute, Mr Montieth said, that clause 1 was slightly in conflict with the Shops and Offices Act, but .the court would take care to see that the terms agreed to by the parties would be substantially caried out. A similar protest to that made by Mr Robinson was lodged by Mr W. W. Batchelor, who appeared for the workers in the matter of the Otago and Southland Shop Assistants’ dispute. Other disputes were those of the Otago Engine Drivers, Southland Sawmillers and Timber Yard Employees, Dunedin Bricknmkers, and Southland Butchers By-Products Employees. There were no objections to the applications. All matters will be taken to Wellington to be filed ag awards.
