LONELY ROAD ATTACK

WOMAN CYCLIST TERRIFIED f' ’, One of the lonely roads of Northeast Hampshire was recently the scene of yet another outrageous attack on a defenceless woman. The victim was the 21-year-old wife, of Sergeant H. T. Dunn, of the East Yorkshire Regiment, stationed at Aldershot, and she. was waylaid when ‘riding a bicycle at Prior’s Dean, near Liss. Mrs Dunn was knocked off ■’ her machine, but escaped her assailant by twisting one of his thunnte and kicking him. Then she ran to a neighbouring cottage and collapsed. Tho tenant or the cottage, Mr A. H. Collis, stated:' “ My wife and I were sitting in the kitchen, when suddenly the door hurst open and a woman entered in an hysterical condition and fell on the sofa. “ When she was able to tell us what had happened we all ran out, but there was then no sign of the man.” Mrs Dunn is employed at Greenways, Hmchley Wood, Esher. She related in an interview, “ I had cycled five miles over very hilly roads in the hope of meeting my husband, who I knew was taking part in the manoeuvres in the district. Then, as I was drenched skin by a sudden downpour, I decided to turn back. “ Near Prior’s Dean I passed a man on a bicycle coming from the opposite direction. I asked him if I was- on th<* right road, and he replied, ‘ Yes.’ Soon I came to a steep hill. I wai afraid to ride down, so I dismounted. Looking back I saw the man behind me. He came up and put his arm on my shoulder. I screamed, and he then put his hand over my mouth, saying, ‘ If you don’t shut up and hand over your bag I’ll choke you.’ ‘‘Then I twisted his thumb, and ha released me. As he did so I kicked him in the stomach, and he fell over his machine. Jumping on my_ bicycle, I rode oft" quickly ■ toward Prior’s Dean. The man had remounted by this time and was following me. I ran into,the first cottage 1 saw. and as I, fell in the doorway he rode past at terrific speed.”
