SURF LIFE SAVING
OTAGO ASSOCIATION’S MEETING Thursday night’s meeting of the Otago Surf Association was held in the club room, St. Clair, Mr J. L. M‘lndoe presiding over the following attendance :—Messrs H. H. Henderson, H. D. Gillies, H. James, A. Findlay, A. G. Beadle, J. L. Turnbull, Wm, Harrison, A. Thomas, and the hon,. secretary (Mr J. M. Rodgerson). Notification was received from Wellington of the alterations to the proposed amended constitution as adopted at the recent annual meeting of the New Zealand Surf Live-saving Association. The secretary was instructed to pass this information on to the clubs. Further advice stated that a grant of £IOO had been made to the New Zealand Council by the Minister of Internal Affairs, and this was considered very gratifying. The New Zealand Council also advise that the matter of ama.teur status had been considered at length, and it had been decided to ask the New Zealand Swimming Association to grant a dispensation to allow the surf teams’ race, beltman's championship, and individual surf races, to be classified as life-saving events. New Zealand champion matters were fully discussed, and reports were received from the various working committees. The Billetting Committee reported having arranged to billet two teams from whom inquiries had been received, and also submitted a list of city hotels together with their tariffs. It was decided to peruse the list and pick out the most suitable, and forward same to Wellington to be circularised amongst the life-saving clubs. Mr Gillies tabled a plan for a proposed new buoy. This was favourably considered, and it was decided to have a sample made at once for testing purposes. _ ■ ' The St. Clair Club wrote submitting the names of officials for their Sugar Cup Competition, to be held next Sunday.—Approved.
The Oreti Club submitted proposed dates for local competitions. These were granted, and in view of their having a gala day about the time previously chosen tentatively for the Otago surf championships, it was decided to put the date for the latter fixture on a month, the dates - now being fixed for January 25 and 26. . December 8 was allotted the St,Hilda Club for its opening day. Its application to hold a surf medallion examination on Sunday, December 1, was granted, Messrs H. D. Gillies and A. Findlay being appointed the examiners. , _ The secretary was instructed to forward on to Wellington an order for a standard reel, belt, and line, received from the St. Hilda Club.
