THE PRIME MINISTER’S TOUR.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I noticed with some surprise that during the Prime Minister’s electioneering peregrinations in _ the National Party’s interests he is accompanied by quite a considerable Government suite, and the party are being conveyed in two palatial limousines driven • by Government chauffeurs. Would you therefore bo so good as to inform me whether the unfortunate taxpayer has to supply the expenses of this effort of one particular party to catch the votes at the elections? Further than this, are Messes Savage and Hislop also able to lavish the public money in the -interests of their own parties? I notice, .too, that the Minister of Finance is electioneering in a most extravagant manner—by aeroplane. It would be most illuminating to know the source from which this expense is met.—l am, etc.. Curious. Gore, November 20. [The Prime Minister’s “ quite considerable suite.” consists of a private secretary and a typist. While on tour Mr Forbes is conducting the business of his departments, the , operations l of which are not suspended by the election campaign. Like candidates who hire cars in which to travel through districts that are not served by railway lines, the Prime Minister has been under the necessity of hiring cars for the transport of himself and his party. There is a very strict departmental rule that if Ministers use cars for other than official business they have to pay for the mileage so used. —Ed. E.S.]
