HOLY NAME EETE

SUCCESSFUL OPENING NKMT A novel scheme of decorations transformed the Victoria Hall into a fairy- ■ land of illumination and colour last - evening, when the three-days’ fete in aid of the Holy Name School was opened by Rt. Rev. Mgr. Morkane, in the absence of His Lordship Bishop Whyte. The • five stalls were prettily • decorated with streamers of coloured lights and artificial floral designs, , while rows of Chinese lanterns hung from the ceiling in a large cluster to the centre. There was a large crowd present, and an exceptionally gay evening was spent, the side-shows and entertainments providing a great deal of fun for the visitors. The Waverley Boys’ Band played selections during the evening. In opening the fete. Mgr. Morkane apologised for the absence of the bishop, who had sent his good wishes for the success of the function. Mgr. Morkane spoke of the progress that had been made in the Holy ]Name district, particularly in educational wort, and expressed the hope that the strenuous efforts of the promoters would be well rewarded by large attendances and generous support from the community. The first evening’s attendance was very gratifying, and he congratulated the promoters upon this response. The fete will continue this evening, and to-morrow afternoon and evening. An orchestra will play this evening and to-morrow evening, and the boys’ band will play to-morrow afternoon.
