STRICTER SUPERVISION PROPOSED DECISION OF WORKS COMMITTEE The Works Committee of the City Council reports that there appears to have grown up lately a practice among • builders, carpenters, and others ol carrying out building work, more especially repairs and additions to existing buildings, without first applying for and obtaining the requisite building permit as laid down in the council’s by-laws in this regard. These provide (inter alia) that before begin, ning to erect any building, or to alter, add to, renew, or repair any building already erected, or to execute any other work placed under thq. control and supervision of the council, the builder, owner, or . occupier shall submit to the city building inspector the plans and specifications of the contemplated work for his inspection, and should such plans, etc., appear to be in accordance with the building regulations the building inspector shall issue a permit to allow the work to proceed. Recent investigations have disclosed that, either by reason of ignorance , of the by-law or of deliberate evasion of its .provisions, builders and others bays been carrying out repairs and alterations to buildings without the necessary building permit, and in respect of two such' breaches instructions have been given to the city solicitors to take legal action against those concerned. 1
