—Ministerial.— The Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes), accompanied by Mrs Forbes and Mr C. A. Jeffrey (private secretary), travelled from Invercargill by the through train this morning, _ He is en route to Christchurch to give an election address at Rangiora to-night. Mr A. S. Cockson left for Wellington by this morning’s express. Captain A. J. Ckarman. Marine Superintendent for the South Island, was a passenger for Christchurch by this morning’s express. _ ' Mr James Bcgg left this morning for Wellington. Mr F. O’Rorke, secretary of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement, left by the express to-day for, Wellington to attend the National Con, ference. Mr J. L. Gardiner returned from Invercargill by the express this morning. Mr G. H. Eliffe was a passenger from Invercargill by this mondng’a express. The Rev. T. A. Pybus has been appointed to represent Otago and Southland district synod at the annual Methodist conference to be held in Christchurch in February. Mr D. F. Moncur, managing director of the Dominion Tyre and Rubber Company, Wellington, arrived in Dunedin yesterday. The staff of South Island Motors meii yesterday to bid farewell to their workshop foreman, Mr W. Broadbent, wha is leaving to take up a position in tha North Island. In making a presentation, the manager (Mr A. B. Armoury referred to the capabilities of Mr, Broadbent and expressed regret as losing the services of so qualified a motor' engineer. A Wellington Association message, states that the police examination re-, suits show that six candidates passed’ the_ whole of the sub-inspector’s examination, the successful men being Senior' Sergeant L. K. Capp (Wanganui),Sergeant P. C. Felton (Freeman’s’ Bay), Sergeant J. W. Claasen (New- 1 market). Constable J. SouthwortK (Christchurch), Constable W. R. Miller; (Palmerston North), and Detective A.Jenvey (New Plymouth). Constables N. S. Milligan and L. E. G. Wilson (Auckland) were the only candidates to pass the whole of the senior-sergeant’s examination, and the only man to pass the whole of the sergeant’s examination was Detective W. Kane (Wellington). Word has been received that Dr Murray A. Falconer, of the Dunedin Medical School, has passed the final examination for Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, London. Several staff changes were announced at a meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board last night. Captain A. V. H. Munro, traffic manager, and duel wharfinger, is retiring on superannuation, and Mr T. W. Boon has been f pointed to fill the vacancy. Mr M.Smyth has been appointed assistant l traffic manager in place of Mr Boon, and Mr F. E. Outtrim has been appointed labour foreman and assistant! wharfinger. Mr W. A. Hunn and Mr W. M'Bain have also been appointed assistant wharfingers. At yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the Otago Boys’ and Girls High Schools Board reference was made to the passing of Mr W. Mills, who was a pupil of tho Boys’ High School in its first year. After members _ had expressed their regret it was decided to forward a letter of sympathy to Mr Mills’s relatives. , . ; - The death occured at Oamaru, yesterday, of Mr Jeremiah O’Brien, of Waikawa, one of the Dominion’s bestknown horse dealers. His opinion on either draught or light horses was keenly sought from time to time. He owned trotting horses and met witK a good measure of success. His main activities in horse dealing were in partnership with Mr J. Mitchell, of Studholme, the firm carrying on a big business in the sale of horses which 1 were shipped from New Zealand to Australia. Mr O’Brien was a very keen business man. but his integrity, of character and principles earned him the highest esteem.! In his quiet, unassuming way he did much good for his fellow men, aud to many he was a’ real friend in need, though he kept his generous nets quietly to himself.He had a wide circle of friends. His only participation in public life' was through his association with sporting bodies. For many years he was., a'' member of the Oamaru Trotting Club aud .Oamaru Jockey Club, and he was an indefatigable worker for both clubs.Much credit may be given to him for the manner in which splendid appointments at the Oamaru racecourse'haVa been installed. Latest arrivals at the Grand Hotel are Messrs J. R. Rutland and R. Hislop (Auckland), Dir S. J. Lard ('Havelock North), and Messrs G. G. M‘Farlane and K. Belford (Wellington).
