VIOLIN RECITAL

On Tuesday next Mr Rees M'Conachy will present to the musical public of Dunedin his annual recital. He will be assisted by Miss Betty Hilliard, the accomplished Australian contralto. Mr M'Conachy returned from America about three years ago after studying with Arthur Hartmann in New York and with Jasper Sutcliffe in Vancouver. He was described by Arthur Hartmann as one of has most promising pupils, and during his stay in New York was given the opportunity of working with the American Orchestral Society under the baton of Chalmers Clifton. Mr M'Conachy’s playing is marked for its breadth of understanding , and range of tone. Since his return from abroad the enthusiastic support which his recitals have aroused has induced him to plan an animal recital, at which modem and classical works will be presented. Miss Betty Hilliard, an Australian by birth, studied under Madame Bennet North in Sydney, where her recitals stimulated much interest. Miss Hilliard is particularly talented in the interpretation of Russian songs,- including those of Rachmaninoff and. Tschaikowsky. Her renderings are of a calibre which gives her work a special appeal to musicians, and her treatment of the songs of Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, and Mozart has established her popularity with critics of sound judgment both in New Zealand and abroad. . Miss Clarice Colbert, who will accompany both soloists, will be heard in some attractive solos. Miss Colbert is an able and versatile pianist, and the success of her appearances in public distinguish her as one of Dunedin’s most promising pianists. '
