DUNEDIN CENTRAL MR W. H. SHEPHERD’S CANDIDATURE ENDORSED BY NATIONAL PARTY Mr William Henry Shepherd will bo the Nationalist candidate for the Dunedin Central seat. The first official selection of a local candidate in the National Government interests was made last evening, when supporters in the Dunedin Central electorate met and unanimously endorsed the candidature of Mr Shepherd. Arrangements were made for a general

meeting to be called at an early date, when committees for the various parts of the electorate will be set up and the work of the campaign set in motion The endorsement confirms the prediction made in last night’s issue of, the ‘ Star.’ Mr Shepherd was born in Melbourne and educated at the East Melbourne School. He gained his early business training in that city, and came to Dunedin 21 years ago to take up the position of manager of the Bell Tea Company, a position which he still occupies. He is also a director of the company. During the time he has been in Dunedin Mr Shepherd has been asso ciated with those bodies representing the commercial interests of the city. He has been a member of the Chamber of Commerce for -the past 15 years. and has served two terms on the executive. He is also a member of the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association, and is at present filling his third term on the executive of that body. In addition he is president of the Dunedin Traders’ Welfare Association. Mr Shepherd has taken an active interest in sport, and has been a member of the Kaituna Bowling Club for the past IB years, including a term as president of the club. He was appointed a justice of the peace some 14 years ago. Mr Shepherd was elected a member of the City Council at the 1933 elections, and during the absence of Cr J. W. Munro in Wellington in connection with parliamentary business, Cr Shepherd, ns deputy chairman of the Reserves Committee, has filled the office of acting chairman of the committee. He' has also represented the City Council on the Otago Aero Club, of which he is at present an executive , member. Mr Shepherd is a resident in the electorate, His home being in High street. FOR MATAURA FOUR GOVERNMENT ASPIRANTS INVERCARGILL, August 12. A report from Gore states that interest is developing in the selection of a Government candidate to contest the Mataura seat at the General Election. The names of four probable candidates have been mentioned, and it is expected that they null go before a ballot at a meeting to be held shortly. The names are Mr A. J. Cameron, farmer, of Gore; Mr A. L. Dolamore, solicitor, of Gore; - Mr T. Golden, farmer, of Fortrose, and Mr P. H. , Murney, farmer, of Tapanui. THE “FIELD” FDR RDTORUA ROTORUA, August 12. The six candidates at present reported likely to contest the Rotorua seat have been decreased by one as the result of a statement made by Mr P. Shine, of Eureka, to-day, to the effect that he had never expressed any intention of offering himself as a candidate and had never given anyone authority to use his name in that connection. The “ field ” may be restored to its former strength, however, as a result of the announcement in Auckland that Mr M. H. Hampson, of Rotorua, may stand', possibly as an Independent Reform candidate.

AWARUA SEAT MR JAMES HARGEST THE NATIONAL NOMINEE [Pep. United Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, August 12, At a largely attended meeting at Winton this afternoon Mr dames Hargest, M.P. for Invercargill, was unanimously chosen as the official national candidate for Awarua at the General Election. Mr Hargest was present at the meeting later and acceded to the request to contest the seat. The Hon. F. Waite, M.L.C., presided, and Mr do la Perrelle was_ also present. Warm tributes were paid to Mr do la Perrelle’s sendees in Parlia-

ment, both as a Minister of the Crown and as the member for Awarua,_ and the following resolution was, carried — “ This meeting of Awarua electors learns with great regret of Mr de la Perrelle’s inability to stand for reelection, thanks him for his loyal service as a private member and as a Minister of the Crown, and expresses the hope that a short period of rest will complete his recovery to health.” Mr do la Perrello, in reply, said that some day he might have sufficient strength to re-enter politics. MR JULL FDR WAIPAWA WAIPUKURAU, August 12. An attendance of 40 electors at a publicly convened meeting of supporters of the National Political Federation was held at Waipukurau this afternoon, Mr Charles Pattison presiding. Mr D. Ardell, Dominion organiser, and Mr A. E. Jull, M.P., addressed the meeting. On the motion of Mr P. Hunter, seconded by Mr A. E. Averill, a resolution was unanimously carried endorsing tbe agreement entered into between the leaders of the Reform and United Parties to federate for the purpose of contesting the forthcoming election as a National Government. A resolution was also carried—- “ That this meeting confirms the candidature of Mr Jull as the National candidate for the Waipawa electorate, and agrees to do everything possible to secure his election.”
