CYCLING

PROFESSIONAL RACE. The above club held the seventh race of the Beale Cup series from Beale’s Hotel, Green Island, to Outram via Allanton, and return via Wylie’s Crossing, in ideal. weather conditions. A good field faced the starter, the limit men, Reddell, Finnerty, Marsh, and Kelly, setting off at a good clip untir Welsh and Scott, virtual scratch, left 12 minutes later. The first men maintained a good pace all the way, and were picked up by O’Neill and Johnstone (lOmin). Cannon and Hay had picked up Heasley and Cooper, and were going well. On Saddle Hill Marsh and O’Neill left the others, and went on alone. In a good finish Marsh beat O’Neill home, Johnstone being third, Reddell fourth, and Kelly (a new rider) next. Finnerty punctured at Wylie’s Crossing, Following are the official placings:— W. Marsh 1, K. O’Neill 2, 6. Johnston* 3, S. Reddell 4, J. Kelly 6, 6. Heasley 6, M. Cannon 7, A. J. Hay 8, J. Welsh' 9, T. Scott 10. Fastest time was gained by J. Welsh. The thanks of the club are due to Mr J. A. Beale for use of dressing room and Mr M. Beale for use of motor cycle. THE AMATEURS The Dunedin Amateur Cycling ChiV held its race for the M’Lachlan Cup, the course being around the Taieri, Twenty-two riders faced the starter (Mr Fletcher), who sent the limit men away at 3.5, the others going at intervals until 6imin, after which th* scratch men were sent away. At Allanton the limit men, Hobbes, Black, and S. Laws were leading by a halfminute from A. Umbers and S. Laws, who had dropped their co-marker, T. Guy. At the Outram sub-station Black was leading a bunch, who were rapidly being caught by a bunch of eight middle-markers. At this period the scratch men had gained half their handicap. At Outram _ the middlemarkers had caught the limit men. At this stage the riders, being well bunched, no one was keen to do th* pacing. T. Faid beat T. Guy by half a 'wheel, with MTver a wheel back. Time honours went to A. Fletcher, whose time was 55min 52sec for th* 21J miles. C. Gilchrist, who was sseo behind, gained second fastest. Official placings: T. Faid (3§min) 1, T. Gay (sJmin) 3, J.
