THIRD HOCKEY TEST

INDIA WINS 7-1 UNCANNY STICK WORK [Put Unites Frew Association.) AUCKLAND, July 20. After a dull morning the sun shone just before the teams took the field at Eden Park, getting a great reception. The crowd was estimated at 10,000. The Indians opened the attack, and Rogers nearly let them through, but New Zealand cleared, and India had difficulty in keeping the Dominion out froni a nice centre by Turbitt. Conceding a centre, the Indians were four times recalled for starting too soon. New Zealand received consolation when eventually Turbitt’s corner shot was beautifully goaled by Bay after four minutes’ play. New Zealand 1, India 0. The Dominion eleven maintained the offensive, India having to concede another corner, and from subsequent movements Bay had two other shots, which just missed. The Indians, on clearing, were conspicuous in two brilliant movements by the wingers, Fernandez and Shahbudin, and from resulting pressure Roop Singh passed to Wells, who equalised. Immediately afterwards Harbail Singh gave Chand an opportunity to place India-ahead. He accepted it, as he did another chance of a goal from his own unaided efforts, thus making the score 3-1 after quarter of an hour’s playIt was. evident that when the Indian forwards got ppssession the New Zealanders had very little chance of stopping their onslaughts. Bay was conspicuous in the next attack by the Dominion, but the Indians were soon back, and short passing in tie twenty-fives constantly had New Zealand’s defence in difficulties. • At this stage the stickwork of the Indians was uncanny. A stinging shot by Roop Singh beat the goalie, but no score was signalled. New Zealand broke away a few times, but lost control, and the Indians in the main kept the home team pegged down. New Zealand set up another stronger attack, just as half-time was called, with the Indians leading, 3-1. Second spell the Indians had increased their lead to 4-1 within a minute of re-opening, Chand scoring from a beautiful centre by Fernandez, after Watts had been injured. The Indians resumed the offensive, Rup Singh making the score 5-1 with a direct hit. Fernandez next beat the defence,.'but apparently the goal was disallowed for “ sticks.’’ Watts electrified the crowd by taking the ball the whole length of the ground. He beat the goalie, but the ball trickled past the post. Following an exchange on the right wing, Norman Bowden’s long shot went into the net, and the crowd was disappointed when no goal resulted, Bowden being well outside the circle. A strong New Zealand attack followed, Bay narrowly missing a goal, and with a quarter of an hour to go, the Indians still led 5-1.

The pace of the game became noticeably slower, but the Indian’s supremacy was no less. Wells and Chand goal dec! for India, making the score 7-1. Wells’s goal was the most spectacular of the match. He bounded towards the goal propelling the ball in the air at the end of his stick, and gave the goalie no chance. Final score: India ... «, ... ... t New Zealand ... w> a» iu 1
