POLICE COURT
FRIDAY, JULY 19. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) CHIMNEYS ON FIRE. Archibald Frank Anderson and Clement Alfred Hill were fined 5s and costs, and William Charles Barnes 10s and costs for allowing chimneys to catch fire. UNLAWFULLY IN HOTEL. Percy Dunn, Gordon Grant, James M‘Kinnou, Alfred Pitfield, and William Williams were all fined 10s and costs for being on hotel premises after hours. MOTORISTS IN TROUBLE. George Alexander Magorian was fined £1 and costs for driving against the traffic signals in Stuart street. Malcolm St. Clair Ferguson, for cutting a corner, was fined £1 and costs. Lester Hammond Aitken, an unlicensed driver, was fined 5s and costs. Thomas Davies Charles M'Laren was fined 10s and costs for failing to keep to the left of the road. Walter Milne was fined £1 and costs for failing to keep to the left of the street when turning at the Octagon. William Duncan Campbell was fined £2 and costs for using a truck with defective brakes, the traffic inspector stating that it was one of the worst cases that had come to his knowledge, Edward Capps Mitchell was fined £1 and costs for failing to give way to traffic approaching on the right. The defendant collided with another car and pushed it across the street, the second car breaking a post, which fell into a shop window. John Brewer admitted a charge _of negligent driving, the police stating that he was involved in an accident near the Brown House and drove’ on after refusing to give his name and address. Brewer was fined £2 10s, with •witnesses’ expenses of £2 4s (a plea of not guilty having previously been entered), and court costs £1 ss. Ron Johnston, charged with plying for hire for the carriage of goods in his motor van without obtaining a license, was fined 5s and costs. Charles • Frederick Roberts was fined £2 10s and costs for failing to give way to traffic on the right, thereby being implicated in a collision with a motor cyclist. George’ Ross pleaded guilty to charges of failing to stop at a constable’s signal and driving an unlighted motor truck. After evidence had been given the first charge was withdrawn, and on the second a fine of 10s and costs was imposed. Thomas Leslie Raines was charged with not leaving his car under proper control in Frederick street, the vehicle having run back and broken a post. The defendant said that he left the car in gear and with the brake on, and, after hearing the evidence, His Worship dismissed the charge. A charge of negligent driving was preferred against Henry G. Newey (Mr W. D. Taylor), who peaded not guilty. After hearing the evidence the magistrate dismissed the information. UNLIGHTED CYCLE. Courtney Wilfred Higgs, who rode an unlighted cycle, was convicted without penalty. On a similar charge Harold Stuart Robinson was fined 5s and costs.
