There seems to be no end to the patent and special types and forms of propulsion which are available for shipowners, says the ‘ Syren and Shipping.’ In one of the most recent of these the inventor claims to be able to propel ships without either normal screws or rudders. Tho Voitli-Sehneider propeller, as tho device is called, consists of a series of vertical blades turning

on their own axis and capable of rotation about a common centre. By adjusting the blades the thrust from the engine can bo adjusted, and the ship can be manoeuvred in any direction according to the position of the control wheel on the bridge. The engine itself can be a non-reversing unit, and with the blades in “ neutral ” no thrust is transmitted to the hull of the ship. The position of the blades is controlled from the bridge, thus the engineer on watch has nothing to do except to keep the engine running at the speed which the man at the control pedestal on the bridge determines. We have made a trip in a ship with this typo of drive, and from a manoeuvring point of view it seemed to leave little to bo desired. The arrangement has many of the attributes of electric propulsion, without the first cost of this-type of drive. The device is marketed as a complete unit, and the shipbuilder is not concerned with the furnacing of plates for bossings or with the arrangement of apertures; neither is there any troublesome construction due to tho fitting of A brackets, often in difficult positions on fore and aft girders. Wo have not yet heard of this system of drive being fitted to any small craft in this country.
