The Minister of Defence, Justice, and Marine (Hon. J. G. Cobbe) left Wellington for the south last night to deal with a number of matters affecting his departments.

The Hon. F. Waite came from Baidu th a this morning and went on by the express for Wellington. ■ Mr W. Hinchey, of the Southland Power Board, passed through Dunedia this morning on his way to Wellington. ,

Mr E. C. Sievier general manager for New Zealand or the Vacuum Oil Company, was a passenger for Wellington by the 11.35 ttain today. Mr G. Adess left for Wellington by the second express to-day. Mr W. Stevenson, booked for Auckland, travelled by the 11.35 train this morning. J Mr J. N. Smith went by train to-day from Dunedin to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs J. H. Gould, of North* east Valley, left this morning for a tour of the North Island. As Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of f New Zealand the Rev. Dr Dickie is planning a comprehensive tour of the north, to begin next month, and lasting till November. Amongst his important engagements will be, the opening of the extension of the Hamilton church buildings. This is one of the churches which has lately very considerably infcreased its membership. Mr F. Hackworthy left yesterday for Sydney, w’here' he will - spend a few days before sailing for London. . At-last night’s meeting of the Mosgiel .Borough Connell the mayor made reference to the illness of Mr J. P.: Walls, who, he said,'had reported the council’s meetings for a number of years, and it was agreed to send a letter or sympathy to Mr Walls. The death . occurred in Christchurch 1 on Saturday afternoon of Mr Charles Edwin Moorhouse, at, the age of 70 years. Mr Moorhouse, who was bom in England, was the son of Mr William Sefton Moorhouse, a nephew of the second Superintendent of Canterbury., He arrived in New Zealand at the age of 10 in the barque Peter Denny, and> since that time had resided in Otago and Canterbury. For a number of years he was engaged in gold mining in Central Otago and Southland. Ha was at one time an enthusiastic yachtsman, and was a prominent competitor in many of the earlier regattas on Otago Harbour.' For many years ho was an officer in the Otago division of the Naval ■Volunteers. He was a keen angler, and a good shot. _ Mr Moorhouse is survived by a widow, and a family of seven. Mr Lester; F. Moller, LL.B., tho Otago Rhodes scholar, will leave Dunedin on Friday, accompanied by his parents (Mr and Mrs E. T. Moller), en route for Auckland, where he will connect with the Rotorua for England. On reaching Oxford he will take up residence at Brasenose College. Mr W. Russell-Wood has accepted an engagement to visit Cambridge, Waikato, in October to adjudicate .the elocutionary sections at the annual competitions festival. Mr Gr.ndell (Auckland), Messrs C. S< Peato and F. M. Jollands, and Miss Patrick (Wellington) are - staying at the City Hotel. The members of the Balmacewenl Tennis Club met yesterday to bid farewell to Mr W. Stevenson,, jun.,.who has been transferred to take charge of the Auckland branch, of -Messrs Irvine, Stevenson. Ltd. The club’s president (Mr A. M'Millan) paid a tribute to the work of Mr Stevenson, who had acted as secretary to the club. On behalf of the committee.and members ho presented a set of hair brushes as a token of their good, wishes.
