COLD AND CHANGEABLE The following weather forecast was issued at noon by the Meterological Office, Wellington, covering the south* ern district—Dunedin, Port Chalmers, Tapanui, Winton, Invercargill, Riverton, Orepuki, Bluff, Halfmoon Bay:— A rather deep depression is passing eastwards off New Zealand, while a moderate anti-cyclone is advancing across the Tasman Sea. Forecast: Moderate to strong west to south-west winds, of gale force on parts of the coast, but decreasing shortly. Weather cold and changeable, with scattered showers, but improving gradually. Seas rough to high. MIDWINTER CONDITIONS. Sunless and chill, Saturday afforded a threatening prospect of an unpleasant week-end. Dark cloud banks were in evidence before nightfall, when tha strength of the south-westerly wind increased. In the early hours of Sunday morning rain set in, and pelted down heavily for several hours. In the afternoon it eased off, and finally cleared* All the time the southerly wind made the day cold. The rainfall totalled .58in, ,42in being recorded from 9 a.m.yesterday, and the remainder prior toi that hou. - . Cold, windy, and overcast weather was experienced to-day, heavy rain showers being driven up by a higff sou’-wester a little before 11 a.m. Midwinter conditions (prevailed at midday, when the mercury had reached only 42.4 deg, the minimum temperature for the morning being 38deg. _ The barometer was steady at 29.4 in. The respective maximum and minimum temperatures for 24 hours on Saturday were 48.6 deg and 43.5 deg, and on Sunday 45.5 deg and 34.5 deg No frost waa recorded during the week-end.
