PEDESTRIANS STRUCK

TRAGEDY OH HUH ROAD [Pee United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, June 30. A fatal accident occurred on the Hutt road in the early hours of this morning,' when two men who were walking on the road were struck by a motor car and injured, one dying shortly after. They were .-—Roland Baines, aged 23, married, of London, a trimmer on the Shaw, Savill steamer Pakeha, who is dead; Robert Downie, aged 30, single, of London, also a trimmer on the Pakeha. The men were walking together on the bitumen portion of the road towards Wellington. The car was driven by Mr B. Smith, who had with him several passengers, and was returning to Wellington from Petone. Baines received seyere head and body injuries. Downie was taken to hospital suffering from abrasions.
