DUNEDIN JUNIOR ORCHESTRA
The first concert of the third season of the orchestra will be given ■in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on Monday July 8. The programme chosen by Mr lloy Spackman (the enthusiastic conductor of his organisation) for the concert is a varied one and should meet with Iho approbation of all music lovers. A now orchestral selection, ‘ Tschaikow-sky-Fantaisie,’ arranged by John Foulds, and only published last year, will bo, one of the main items to be given by the orchestra. This fantasie has lately been recorded by the 8.8. C. Orchestra in London, and includes many of the popular compositions of this famous composer, including the ‘ Nutcracker Suite,’ ‘ March Slave,’ 1 Andante from String Quartet,’ ‘ Chanson Triste,’ and ‘ Overture 1812.’ Suppe’s popular overture, ‘ Morning, Noon, and Night,’ will also bo played, following out the poilcy of the conductor in making the players familitr with all the standard overtures as part of their orchestral training. A very tuneful number by Ketelby is ‘ The Sacred Hour,’ in which the solo will be played by Mavis M'Cormack, the popular lender of the orchestra. Eastliopo Martin’s ‘ Evensong,’ a beautiful arrangement of a well-known organ- solo, and Gillette ever-popular ‘ Loin du Bal ’ are two numbers . that will give the orchestra opportunities to demonstrate the capabilities of light and shade. Three selections that have proved outstanding items at previous concerts will be repeated on this occasion—' The Pilgrims’ Chorus’ (from ‘ Tannhansor’), Schubert’s ‘ March Militaire.’ and Brahms’s ‘ Hungarian Dance No. 5,’ The vocal soloist will be Mr F. G. Tnplin, who will sing ‘ When the King Went Forth to War,’ by Koenman. and * Elegie ’ (Massenet). Dorothy Kush will be the soloist from the ranks of the orchestra and will play a ’cello solo, ‘ Consolation,’ by Squire. The London Junior Orchestra has lately taken the Dunedin Junior Orchestra under its wing and included in the programme of its last concert a full-page photograph of the local young society. The prices of admission to the forthcoming concert are advertised, and anyone attending primary or secondary schools will be admitted for half-price. Plan opens at Beggte on Tuesday morning.
